I'm looking for some info on this airport and internet access ahead of travelling there in two weeks' time. Anyone else got any pointers?

WiFi is only easy to use for CMCC (China Mobile) users. if you are not a China Mobile user you can't use the wifi, and there is no where to purchase the account to login., There is also China Telecom's access point there, but you can never find any place to buy the account. :(, It's not possible to get online through credit card., Cellular network, CMCC's GPRS is very slow there, China Unicom's CDMA 1X is nice, but again, you need to be a user of China Unicom and you must have a CDMA 1X adapator card or a CDMA 1X Cell phone.

This is a massive (and there are some big airports around to compare it to) facility, obviously built with the city's growth and international links in mind. As well as being new it was relatively stress-free, even with all the bureaucracy and has a lot of space. I even had a chance to do some lastminute gift shopping, which is easy to navigate and good quality. In terms of connectivity, I got the ever-present GSM signal just fine, though without a network name I recognised, and they even have handy terminals to recharge all manner of devices, at a reasonable rate. Wi-fi was more hit and miss, but it was just a scan I did from my PDA, rather than sitting down to any serious work with a laptop. Powerpoints? Didn't see many at all, whcih is a shame as the basic seating areas were comfortable and safe.

I usually hang out in business lounge (thanks to my Qantas Club) - which is quite impressive. It has free wifi, free massage chairs - and a smoking room!! The wifi network is actually quite strong and it can spill to common areas. So you may want to locate the lounge and just try to grab that signal instead.

Got a pretty strong wifi point just sitting at one of the international departure gates. There's plenty of cafe/food stops nearby with sparse yet adequate power, but gate seating is abound with power outlets. VPN access is fine. For some reason, I'm unable to FTP or SSH to get some real work in since I'm stuck at PVG for a 5-hour layover.
